Ayah Tathir QA Vs 33:33: وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلَا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَأَقِمْنَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتِينَ الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِعْنَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ ِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا Stay in your houses and do not flaunt your finery like the former [days of pagan] ignorance. Maintain the prayer and pay the zakat, and obey Allah and His Apostle. We focus on the second part of this verse – without going too deep into the Arabic Grammar – explain that the first part of the verse is talking to the wives of the Holy Prophet (saw) using the female particle “Kunna” (you f. pl.) and the second part if referring to a group of people with at least 1 male as it uses the male/mixed gender particle “Kum” (you m. pl.) and so because of this has to refer to a different group of people than the wives – we understand this group to be the Ahlul Bayt (as) due to other verses of the Holy Qur`an (e.g. Verse of Mubahila) and Ahadith by the Holy Prophet (saw)/Ahlul Bayt (as) themselves. Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification [33:33]

Studying Ayah Tathir QA Vs 33:33: The article “innama” denotes that this is something exclusive “Rijs” here means any form of impurity إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ ِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification [33:33] Innama – meaning certainly but exclusively i.e. Verily/Only: This purification is ONLY for the Ahlul Bayt (as) Rijs - means an impure thing, whether it is impure from the view of man’s nature, or according to the intellect or religion or all of them. Tathir - meaning purification. It is an emphasis on the negation of any kind of uncleanness; and its mentioning here in the form of ‘absolute object’ is counted as another emphasis on this meaning. Why mention the thorough purification? To show the absolute nature of purity/removal of impurity

Circumstances of Revelation Grammatical Argument We have other verses in the Qur`an Hadith that refer to their total submission to Allah (swt) and their lofty conduct/spirituality – which is why Allah (swt) has purified them Circumstances of Revelation – i.e. Hadith Kisa Grammatical Argument – the group being addressed includes at least one man We have other verses in the Qur`an that we know refer to the same Ahlul Bayt (Ahlul Kisa) e.g Mubahila or the verse this prefaces in Surah Waqia (77-79) Verily this is an honourable Qur’an in a hidden book, no one can touch it (i.e. its deeper meanings) except the purified ones.” Hadith that refer to their total submission to Allah (swt) and their

Plenary QA Group work: 1. Write down as a group the summary of Hadith Al- Kisa 2. Which occasions should we and do we recite this hadith at? 3. Why do we do this? i.e. What are the benefits? 2. It can be/should be recited at any and every occasion/gathering – as stated in the hadith 3. List of benefits the Holy Prophet (saw) recounted (see below). We are also reminded about the greatness of the Ahlul Bayt (as) as Allah (swt) explains them to be the reason for all creation. "O `Ali!" my father Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him and his Household, added, "I swear this by Him Who has sent me with the truth as Prophet and chosen me, as holding communion, to convey the Message; whenever the tale of this gathering of us is mentioned in an assembly of the people of the earth in which a group of our adherents and lover are present and among them there is a distressed one, Almighty Allah shall certainly release him from distress, or there is among them an aggrieved one, Almighty Allah shall certainly relieve him from grief, or there is among them one who needs a request to be granted, Almighty Allah shall certainly grant him his request."
