Biomes
2
A biome is a group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
3
Climate The average weather conditions in an area
4
Tundra
5
Tundra Climate: Very cold, low rainfall
Plants: mosses, grasses, lichens, and shrubs. Permafrost prevents roots from growing deep Migrating Animals: Ducks, geese, elk, moose, caribou, etc.
6
Taiga
7
Taiga Animals: migratory birds, moose, lynx, squirrels
Coniferous trees: fir, spruce and pine. needle-like leaves that can conserve water. Animals: migratory birds, moose, lynx, squirrels Many animals hibernate during the winter when food is sparse.
8
Deciduous Forest
9
Deciduous Forest Climate: Temperature and rainfall varies!
Four seasons Plants: Deciduous Trees (lose leaves) & go dormant Oaks, Maples, Hickory, and Beech Trees Animals: raccoons, deer, rabbits, birds, squirrels
10
Tropical Rainforest
11
Tropical Rainforest Climate: Steady Hot temperatures & high rainfall
Due to the canopy cover the floor of the forest is dark and contains few nutrients. Animals: many tree dwelling organisms such as monkeys, snakes, many bird species, and carnivores.
12
Grassland
13
Grasslands Climate: dry with rainy seasons
Plants: grasses are the dominant vegetation. Most crops grown here Winds and frequent fires are common. Animals have strong legs for hopping. This allows them to see above tall grass.
14
Savanna A savanna is a rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome.
15
Desert
16
Deserts Climate: Deserts can be hot or cold, but All have very little rainfall Plants: must adapt to dry climate: Store water, bloom at night, large roots Animals: active at night, burrow, big ears, sweating, panting, water proof skin to adapt to heat
17
Water Biomes Oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface.
Freshwater lakes, ponds, river, streams cover only a small fraction.
18
Marine Biome The oceans/salt water
Limited by salinity, water pressure, light, and temperature. The ocean is divided into major zones.
19
Estuaries A habitat in which the fresh water of a river meets the salt water of the ocean. Example: Chesapeake Bay
20
Fresh water Stillwater: lakes and ponds
Running water: streams and rivers
