Cav 100 Gliders
2
Sir George Cayley 1. In 1799 recorded a glider design for a fixed wing aircraft on a silver disc. Built gliders large enough to carry a man. Used his coachman as a test pilot. Cayley was reluctant to share is work. published “On aerial navigation” described how lift was created.
3
Otto Lilienthal Considered the greatest glider pilot.
1891 flew the first controlled glider flights. Made over 2500 flights. Was supported by the German government. Built a 50 foot hill outside Berlin for takeoffs. Was killed in 1896 while flying.
4
Octave Chanute 1894 published “Progress in Flying Machines”.
Control done by shifting pilots weight. Design was basically a hang glider. Influenced the Wright brothers.
5
Samuel Langley Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute
Developed scaling technique.
6
Wright brothers Developed kites with control surfaces.
Developed wing warping.
7
Transition to Powered Flight
Damlier- developed the first aeronautical engine. Company he founded is now called Damlier Chrysler.
8
Sir Hiram Maxim Invented the Maxim machine gun.
1894 built a steam powered 3.5 ton aircraft. Got airborne and crashed during testing. Not considered first flight because it did not land succesfully.
9
Samuel Langley 1898 got $50,000 from US Govt to build a passenger carrying airplane. Charles Manly-engine designer. Aerodrome-catapult launched. Made two attempts in October and December of 1903 with Manly at the controls.
10
Wright Brothers Realized that much of the work done before was wrong.
Built their own engine. Attempts were made at Kitty Hawk, NC. Used wing warping and rudder to control flight of aircraft. December 17th, 1903 –first heavier than air, man carrying flight to a safe landing.
11
Glenn Curtiss Main rival to the Wright brothers.
Was one of the original barnstormers. Was a designer of aircraft. Main contribution-development of the aileron for roll control.
12
Litigation Wright brothers patent problems.
No patent for the airplane. Brothers refused to display the original Flyer in the USA. Today is in the Air and Space Museum.
13
Women in Aviation Baroness De La Roche
First woman to solo-1908 in France. Blanche Stuart Scott-First American woman to solo-1910-accidently took off. Harriet Quimby-First American woman to receive a pilots rating first woman to fly across the English Channel.
