Students in Antwerp 5,500 students 97% ever drunk alcohol Binge drinking (>5 dr/occasion) male: 2,0% daily high risk for problematic alcohol use : 10,3-11,1% of male students 1,8-6,2% of female students

Research questions How is an electronic SBI received in a student population? Who is reached by the intervention? What are the experiences of students with the intervention? How can the intervention motivate students who show risk for problematic alcohol use to think about their alcohol use and to change their drinking behaviour?

Intervention Brief intervention Website 24h/7d Personalised electronic feedback Behaviour change Aimed at college students Screening for problematic alcohol use, AUDIT + BMA Information provided

10 Eindrapport: beoordeling filmpjes stoppen met roken
Results 10.5% per institution 3,528 students 54.6% male  45.8% in general student population High risk: male > female* *Van Hal et al, 2007 Only Unique visits 6 different participating institutions

11 Eindrapport: beoordeling filmpjes stoppen met roken
Results AUDIT- high risk unique visits: 18.1% repeated visits: 29.0% Students in high risk groups are more likely to do the test again « a shocking result can stimulate one to do more tests » Underestimation We see the same result in the FGD. Shocking results increases the motivation of the students to think, talk and eventually change their alcohol use. However, we see that students tend to underestimate their own alcohol use and the risks of hazardous drinking. Students tend to relativate the results of the test.

Results High risk VS low risk no referral: info: referral: Students in high risk group are more likely to choose for referral « …it made me think whether to take another drink or not. » Intervention can not make the students stop drinking, but can make them think about their alcohol use and decrease the amount of usage

Results Alcohol use of others Friend as help Internet suited for information on issue Intervention suited for certain group of drinkers « for someone who has the feeling ‘it’s maybe a bit too much now’, the website can have an influence. » Students underestimate their own use and at the same time overestimate the alcohol use of others (friends, fellow students). In every FGD the subject of friends as signpost for problematic alcohol use was mentioned. Therefore, they found the internet-based test very suited for this kin do problems. Someone who doesn’t want to be confronted with their problems but wants to look for information, can search the internet totally anonymously without confrontation. (link with lit). The website is suited for people who might have a drinking problem, who are thinking about it and are motivated to search information on the subject.

Conclusion Well received threshold attention High risk groups To think about alcohol use Misperceptions The intervention seems to be well received in the student population. They were quite enthusiastic about the usefullness of the website. However, we see some conditions for this succes: internet as anonymous source of information  low threshold. To look for referral is a too high threshold. More campaign to keep the attention of the students. The intervention aims to reach students from high risk groups: succeeded! We reach more men than women, and we reach more problematic users than in the previous Antwerp research. Plus, we see that this group is more incited to search for information or referral than the low risk group. We see that students are stimlated to think about their alcohol use and that this motivation is increased when being assessed in the high risk group.
