3 Naming Ionic Compounds – questions to ask

4 Polyatomic Ions Page 202

5 What are they? An ion consisting of a stable group of atoms acting together as a single charged particle Most are anions; exception is the ammonium cation Do not form binary compounds See table 1 page 202 for common polyatomic ions

6 How are they named? Cation is named first
Polyatomic ion named as a unit, not individual atoms Check to see if metal is polyvalent when naming

7 Practice What is the name of the compound Na2CO3? Sodium Carbonate

8 Practice What is the name of the compound Fe(NO3)3? Iron (III) nitrate

9 Practice What is the name of the compound CuSO4? Copper (II) sulfate

10 Practice What is the name of the compound Ca(OH) 2? Calcium hydroxide

11 Practice What is the chemical formula of sodium
phosphate? (use the criss-cross method) Na PO4 Na3PO4

12 Practice What is the chemical formula for copper (II) nitrate?
Cu(NO3)2

13 Practice What is the chemical formula for Ammonium carbonate?
(NH4)2CO3
