Presentation on theme: "What does the conclusion do?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What does the conclusion do?
1. It summarizes the essay. 2. It shows you proved the point you set out to make. 3. It gives the reader a sense of completion. 4. It leaves the reader remembering your main point.

2 Ideas to Include in the Conclusion
Summarize main point by referring briefly to the topic of each paragraph you wrote.   Leave readers with something to think about.  Give a Call to Action - Suggest something readers can do about what they've just read. Provide a Possible Outcome – Tell readers what might happen if they agree or disagree with your claim. This can be encouragement or a warning.

3 How to Structure the Final Paragraph
Topic Sentence/Restated Thesis Statement: repeat the ideas in your thesis statement, but don’t use the same exact wording. “So what?” Technique 3. Supporting sentences: summarize the main points in the body of your essay 3. Call to Action or Possible Outcome 3. Closing sentence: connect back to the introduction to "clinch" the ideas in the essay, showing their importance

4 Restate Your Thesis Statement
Don’t write the same exact words as your thesis statement. Reword and rearrange the statement. Example: Original Thesis Statement – Eating fast foods leads to weight gain, high blood pressure, and overall sluggishness. Restated Thesis Statement – Increase in weight, elevated blood pressure, and sluggishness are caused by the consumption of fast food.

5 The "So What?" Tip After writing your topic sentence, ask yourself:
"So what? Why is that important?" Your next sentence should explain why.  Then ask yourself again:  "So what? Why is that important?"  And so on.

6 Example of the "So What?" Method

7 Another Example of the "So What?" Method
Increase in weight, elevated blood pressure, and sluggishness are caused by the consumption of fast food. A person’s health should be a top priority. People who are healthy are better able to succeed and enjoy life to the fullest.

8 Strategies for Ending the Concluding Paragraph
Explain a deeper understanding of the topic. Add a quotation or surprising insight from the materials you’ve read or researched. 3. Suggest some action to take or a solution to an issue. 4. Bring up questions for further study. 5. Point out broader benefits or consequences of the points you've made.

9 Undoubtedly, installing lockers in our school will eliminate stress, increase student grades, and prevent injuries. It is the wise thing to do. The benefits of locker installation outweigh the cost. Students won’t have one more thing to worry about, teachers will be able to teach effectively, and back problems will be a thing of the past. Please consider my proposal during your next school board meeting. Balance the budget to allow for the installation of lockers. If something is not done to resolve this problem, more students might find themselves permanently disabled. The health and safety of students should be top priorities.
