RI08 Evaluate the argument and specific claims in a complex text; cite specific examples to determine whether or not the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

What is an argument or persuasive essay?
An essay that establishes a position on an issue. This position is supported with reasons and evidence.

An argument must include an issue
An ISSUE is a problem or controversy about which people disagree Ex: Athletes’ salaries

What is a claim? CLAIM - the position on the issue
Ex: Athletes are overpaid.

What is support? reasons that the claim is reasonable and should be accepted Ex: We value entertainment more than health and safety.

What is evidence? consists of facts, statistics, experiences, comparisons, and examples that show why the claim is valid (ethos, pathos, and logos). Ex: For example, average annual salary of nurses is $70,000 compared to $2 -$5 million annual salary of athletes.

You must back your claim with relevant evidence
“I think green beans are terrible.” “Why?” “Just because.” Is this a valid argument?

“Why?” “I hate them because the bus was late today.” Is this a valid argument? Is the reasoning relevant?

“Why?” “I dislike green beans because of their leathery texture. It grosses me out!” Is this a valid argument? Is the reasoning relevant?
