1 RI08 Evaluate the argument and specific claims in a complex text; cite specific examples to determine whether or not the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

2 What is an argument or persuasive essay?
An essay that establishes a position on an issue. This position is supported with reasons and evidence.

3 An argument must include an issue
An ISSUE is a problem or controversy about which people disagree Ex: Athletes’ salaries

4 What is a claim? CLAIM - the position on the issue
Ex: Athletes are overpaid.

5 What is support? reasons that the claim is reasonable and should be accepted Ex: We value entertainment more than health and safety.

6 What is evidence? consists of facts, statistics, experiences, comparisons, and examples that show why the claim is valid (ethos, pathos, and logos). Ex: For example, average annual salary of nurses is $70,000 compared to $2 -$5 million annual salary of athletes.

7 You must back your claim with relevant evidence
“I think green beans are terrible.” “Why?” “Just because.” Is this a valid argument?

8 “I think green beans are terrible.”
“Why?” “I hate them because the bus was late today.” Is this a valid argument? Is the reasoning relevant?

9 “I think green beans are terrible.”
“Why?” “I dislike green beans because of their leathery texture. It grosses me out!” Is this a valid argument? Is the reasoning relevant?
