3. Quartering Act

To save money, the British government required colonist to give British soldiers a place to stay, food, and other supplies.

4. Stamp Act
1765
Required colonists to pay a tax on newspapers and documents written on paper.

5. Townsend Act
1767
Added more taxes on the colonists.

6. Repeal of Townsend Act
1770
Cancelled all of the taxes in the Townsend Act except for the tax on tea.

7. Tea Act
1773
Colonists were not buying tea to show the British government they wouldn’t pay their tax (this is called a boycott). As a result, the East India Company (EIC) who sold tea lost money. To help them the British government allowed (EIC) to ship tea directly to the colonies which allowed them to sell the tea cheaper. This made the colonists angry because they felt EIC was getting special treatment.

8. Boston Tea Party

To teach the British a lesson over the tea act, the colonists dumped a ship load of tea in Boston Harbor.

9. Intolerable Acts
1773
In order to teach the colonists a lesson after the Boston Tea Party the British Government passed 4 new Acts. The colonists called them the Intolerable Acts.
1. Closed the port in Boston
2 & 3 took power away from the colonists
4. Strengthened the Quartering Act.
