Magnetism

Magnetic Force The force that one magnet exerts on another magnet, metal, or moving charges is magnet force. Magnetic force (like electrical force) varies with distance, the closer the objects the greater the force All magnets have magnet poles, the region where the magnet's force is the strongest

Magnetic Force’s (contd.)
Like poles repel one another Opposite poles attract one another Magnetic fields surround the magnet and exert magnetic force Magnetic fields are the strongest at the poles Note magnetic field lines are drawn from N pole to S pole The closer the lines are together, the stronger the field

Magnetism Magnet domains determine whether or not a material is a magnet If the domains are aligned in the same direction then you have a strong magnet Note many materials that are magnetized will not stay that way forever, they are called temporary magnets

Electromagnetism A wire wrapped around a ferromagnetic core (soft iron) that is carrying a current will result in an electromagnet The more wrapped around the ferromagnetic core the stronger the magnet Many devices rely on electromagnets such as analog fuel gauges, electric motors, and loudspeakers
