WHICH IS CORRECT? Nobody likes a dog that bites. Or
Nobody likes a dog which bites.

The old that versus which problem haunts everybody
Especially when grammar check does not know the rules.

Two rules to help you solve the puzzle
If you can drop the clause and not lose the point of the sentence, use which. If you can’t, use that. A which clause goes inside commas. A that clause does not.

Let’s put the rules to work:
Buster’s bulldog, which had one white ear, won best in show. The dog that won best in show was Buster’s bulldog.

What is the point of each sentence?
What happens when we remove the that or which clause? Buster’s bulldog won best in show. The dog was Buster’s bulldog.

Some people consider which more refined than that. NOT SO!
In fact, that is more likely to be grammatically correct than which. Especially when speaking.
