Mission/Presidio Settlements were established to: Keep the French out of Texas Control Texas territory Spread Catholic religion Create loyal Spanish followers out of the Native Americans

The Spanish mission FAILED because: Rapid spread of disease Lack of interest from Native Americans French were no longer a threat after sale of Louisiana Territory to United States

Louisiana Purchase (1803) France sold their territory in North American to the United States for $15 million Used money to finance a war with Great Britain Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the U.S. Because of La Salle’s territory claims in Texas, the United States claimed all land north and east of the Rio Grande

Spain and U.S. Treaties Neutral Ground Agreement of 1806
Land between the Arroyo Hondo and the Sabine River was declared neutral for both Spanish and U.S. troops Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) Agreement between Spain and United States which gave Florida to the U.S. in exchange for giving up all of its claims to Texas
