MOUNTAIN BIKING SKILLS/TECHNIQUE

Always commit to a track or line Choose a line and stick to it otherwise hesitation will kick-in and this is where things will go wrong Think 2 to 3 moves ahead Dont focus on one object for too long.

Slide back on the saddle on steep descents Allows more time to see objects and it hurts less to fall off the back than the front of the bike! Dont just focus on the rider in front of you May end up hitting something the rider in front of you managed to avoid

Shift to an easier gear in patches of sand, water or mud Lean back to allow front tyres to glide through. Do not slam on brakes or will loose momentum and stop easily. Dont grip the handlebars too tight Makes upper body tense and will tire quicker

Do not put your thumb over the handle bar Easier to lose grip if hit an unexpected object Bend your elbows and loosen your shoulders Helps to absorb shock

Using your brakes: Figure out which brake is controlled by which hand In NZ, typically the right hand controls the front brake and the left hand controls the rear brake As a beginner focus on the rear brake to avoid over the handlebar accidents

Brake with two fingers only Much more stability with as many fingers as possible holding the handles grip Apply brakes smoothly and gradually Avoid leaving fingers on the brakes
