2
Jesus as a Central Figure
Jesus is the central figure for all Christian denominations. His life, death, and resurrection is unquestioned and is highly important. Christians express their beliefs through the use of creeds. Creeds highlight what Christians believe in.
3
Apostle’s Creed The most widely used creed by Christians, would be the Apostles’ Creed. It was written around the year 150 C.E. The creed was not written by the Apostles but it states their beliefs.
4
A Summary of the Apostles Creed
All religions strive to explain the nature of reality. The Apostle’s Creed does this through the use of three “I Believe” statements to explain who Gods is and what actions he carries out. Fundamental to Christianity is belief in a God. The creed calls God “Father”. He is considered a parent that has loving, nurturing, and teaching capabilities. The creed also focuses on the salvation history of mankind.
5
The Nicene Creed The Nicene Creed is the only creed accepted by all major parts of the Christian faith. It established what is understood as orthodox Christian teaching in regards to God and the Holy Trinity. The only similarities that may be found between The Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed is a mention of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
6
The Holy Trinity The doctrine of the Trinity is the belief that there is one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This doctrine is one of the most confusing ideas in Christianity but is important because it: -Provides an image of what Christians think God is like and who he is. -Plays an important part into the belief that God is “unobjectifiable and incomprehensible” -Emphasizes the difference between God and humans. -Reflects how Christians believe God encounters them. - Is fundamental to Christian identity.
7
Jesus Is the second person of the Trinity, making him God.
According to the doctrine of the Incarnation, God became flesh in the person of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus is fully human and divine.
8
Sin “Original Sin” For Christians sin was first committed by Adam and Eve, which is why original sin exists Original sin is the condition of sinfulness that all humans share, resulting from Adam’s first sin of disobedience. Original Sin is washed away in Christian Baptism, though the propensity of humans to commit actual sin remains.
9
Salvation Salvation means that there is no sin that God cannot forgive
There is nothing more pleasing to God than one who turns away from wrongdoings and returns to God. Christians believe that those who truly follow Jesus and his way of life are truly saved and will have eternal life with God in heaven.
10
Christian Living The Bible is the main source of instruction on Christian living. Christians follow the Ten Commandments contained in the Torah. Jesus stated that the first commandment was the great commandment.
11
The Great Commandment The “Great Commandment” is the foundation of a Christian life. However there are various different interpretations of the great commandment. Examples of the interpretations of the great commandment include destruction of enemies of God, loving what God created, or abstaining from alcohol, dancing, and card playing.
12
Christian Community and Church
Christians define themselves as those believing in the divinity of Jesus. Christians accept the Bible without adding or subtracting things. The Church is a gathering, in which people believe that Jesus is God through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Church is the name given to the “assembly” or “convocation” of individuals God has called together.
13
Catholic Church and the Fullness of Salvation
There are several divisions in Christianity, making it difficult to talk about one homogenous group. The Catholic Church is the Church established by Christ through the Apostles. The Catholic Church has the fullness of salvation, which is: correct and complete confession of faith, full sacramental life, and ordained ministry in apostolic succession.
14
