Criticize opponents’ case while defending your own Discarding minor points Focus on main points; don’t get caught up in minutia Thinking and speaking in outline terms Be time sensitive: Be clear in your attacks as confusion at this point in the debate can be fatal to your cause… Emphasizing the clash between cases Compare your case to your opponents’ case…obviously emphasizing your strengths

Rebuttal Time Allotments
First Rebuttal (either side) Outline of opponents’ case contrasted negatively to your own case Refutation of at least half of the “outline” Summary and outline of partner’s duties (e.g. “coming attractions”) Second Rebuttal (either side) Summary of entire debate contrasting both cases Refutation of remainder of the “outline” Final summary of entire debate, pointing out the clash between the two cases.
