1 Company Name Date - Time
How we use JCL Company Name Date - Time Pre-session activity: Research the job roles of the learners to obtain background information on the work experiences of the learning group, and to tailor the presentation to meet their needs more specifically. On completion of the PowerPoint presentation, learners were invited to forward you JCL-related questions, and the answers to these should be included in this session. As learners come online, chat briefly with them and ask questions, such as whether they have found the training to be effective, and what type of JCL they have worked with. You will be able to share this information with the learning group when you are ready to start. Presenter/Producer: Approximately 20 minutes before the Webinar, ensure that the "Welcome" slide shown above is displayed so that when learners log in, they know they are in the right place at the right time. You may also want to rotate slides that display general information, such as how learners can ask questions during the session, and the format in which information will be available to them on completion, such as handouts and session recordings. Allow a maximum of three minutes to elapse after the scheduled start time for the benefit of latecomers. Presenter/Moderator: Welcome learners and provide some general information about the upcoming session, such as important Webinar features and the length of the Webinar session, which will be approximately 30 minutes. You can also inform learners about the pre-requisites for the session, which are listed on the right of the Welcome slide, and the level of interaction that will occur throughout the session. Explain that there will be a question and answer session of five to ten minutes duration on completion of the Webinar. © Copyright. All rights reserved. Datatask Pty Ltd

2 About you Group Numbers Operators 2 System analysts 1
Application programmers 4 Presenter: This session is all about you, the learners, who need to obtain the skills and knowledge required to perform your workplace tasks efficiently. So everyone knows a little about each other, I have created a breakdown of your job roles. This is an opportunity for you to impart some of the information that you gathered as you welcomed learners to the session. For example, you could mention that you chatted with several learners about the JCL training and were interested to hear how they are currently using JCL. Ask learners to whom you have not yet spoken to send you a quick chat note with their comments. These are effective "icebreaker" exercises: learners are often relieved to know that others also have only limited experience with JCL.

3 Objectives Clarify any JCL coding syntax or use of our standards
Practice coding simple JCL Presenter: The training sessions that you have undertaken so far have focused on general JCL usage associated with JOB, EXEC, and DD statements from the Datatrain modules. You have also seen two PowerPoint presentations that explained the standards we use when invoking these statements. The aim of this Webinar session is to involve you in the summarizing of all the material in this pathway. This is also an opportunity to answer any questions and correct any misconceptions you have about JCL coding and how it is used in our organization. Read and expand on the above objectives. © Copyright. All rights reserved. Datatask Pty Ltd

4 Comments and questions
General comments received Queries on JCL coding and standards Presenter: We will now look at the queries and information that you have sent me during this pathway. (The amount of time required for this will vary according to the number of queries and comments you have received prior to the Webinar.) Firstly, we will discuss your concerns and general comments about pathway learning and the way it is run. (For example, learners may have indicated that only one PowerPoint presentation is required, not two, or that all the assessments should be left until the end of the last pathway.) Secondly, we will answer the questions about JCL syntax or coding that you have sent me over the last ____ days.

5 Exercise You will now log on to the system and code some JCL.
You have 25 minutes to complete this exercise Presenter: You now have the opportunity to test the knowledge that you have acquired by coding some JCL. This exercise, which must be prepared prior to the Webinar, will simulate a real-life work task by providing instructions on a job that must be created, possibly in a training data set member to which learners will have access. The specifics of the exercise should to be modified according to your organization’s standards. The day before the Webinar, inform learners that the exercise will be taking place so they can ensure that the location in which they will enter their JCL can be accessed. Allow 25 minutes for the learner to complete the exercise; this period is only a guide and you may wish to alter it. You should make yourself available for any questions during this period. When learners complete the exercise, they should exit from the data set to enable you to see their code. The following exercise template can be modified to suit your organization’s requirements: - Learner can log on to _____ using the password ____. - Learners must access data set member ____, which is currently empty. - The job name consists of the logonid the learner has just used; accounting information must be ___; must use a job class of ___; a message class of ___; and a TYPRUN=HOLD should be placed on it so when it runs it only checks the syntax. Other JOB statement parameters are optional. - The job has only one step and executes a program called IEBGENER. This program copies data from the SYSUT1 DD statement to the SYSUT2 DD statement. - An existing input data set is specified in a DD statement named SYSUT1 and is called ___.___ - A new data set is specified in SYSUT2 and is called ____.____. It is to be placed on DASD and does not require any DCB information. Other data set details should be taken from defaults or standards. - A DD statement called SYSPRINT must be included. The class of output specified for this DD statement must be the same as the message class specified in the JOB statement. - A SYSIN DD statement is required by the program, but is not used. - Appropriate comments must be placed in the job. - The learner must submit their job, remembering that only syntax will be checked, and fix any problems. As the presenter, you must have access to see the learners' output on SDSF and assist them where required.

6 Exercise - review Did you write functional and effective JCL?
Presenter: Replace the graphic example with an example that uses the criteria listed on the previous page. Work through the example and explain the coding to learners.

7 Questions Presenter: This question and answer session is the last opportunity for learners to ask any remaining questions that they have. The session will last for approximately 10 minutes. Finish the Webinar by: Thanking learners for attending - Explaining the next stage of the training, which will usually be the “Using Special Data Sets” pathway - Explaining that the Webinar will be available for learners to replay if required, and that they will receive s containing the details - Mentioning that the HR department will send them a survey to complete, if this is the case © Copyright.
