Local people are employed directly and indirectly in tourism Steady wages allow workers a higher standard of living Improved facilities like schools, hospitals and factories Roads and public transport are improved, which can also be used by locals The Multiplier Effect – money spent directly in tourism trickles down to other locals eg the hotel buys fresh products from a local farmer so money stays in the area Demand for locally produced souvenirs New ideas brought to the area

Old buildings repaired and renewed Planting of trees, shrubs and flowers Greater focus on cleaning and litter collection in the local area New developments

4 The problems of tourism on the local people
Locals rarely get the managerial jobs in tourism, but instead do the more menial tasks Seasonal employment so there is little work for much of the year Tourists raise the prices, and locals may not be able to afford these The inappropriate behaviour of tourists may disturb the local traditions Leakage – money is spent on products that are imported from outside the area, which does not benefit the local economy

5 House prices increase and this affects those young locals who are first time buyers

Tourist buildings are visually polluting natural landscapes Litter is unsightly Congestion of beaches and roads Farmland destroyed Wildlife frightened away Vegetation and animals affected adversely Oil pollutes the sea Coral reefs destroyed
