1 Ethics Committee Teacher Education department Faculty of Behavioral & Social Sciences

2 Design workshop Introduction: why? Notification intended research
1/1/2019 Design workshop Introduction: why? Notification intended research Ethics criteria Procedure What does EC not do? Online version Research- and publication packages Discussion Work in progress

3 1/1/2019 Why Ethics Committee? Discussions regarding scientific integrity of published findings National Ethics code for research of social & behavioural sciences Protection of participants in research, protection of the integrity of researchers

4 Basic principles • Avoidance of exploitation
1/1/2019 Basic principles • Avoidance of exploitation • Just distribution of benefits and burden • Respect for persons/human dignity : Participants are treated as autonomous agents; Protection of rights of (specific groups/community of participants (with diminished autonomy) • Scientific validity • Scientific, social and/or educational relevance

5 Faculty No Ethics committee at the faculty level (yet)
1/1/2019 Faculty No Ethics committee at the faculty level (yet) Chairs of ECs psychology, sociology, pedok, teacher education department and dean meet periodically to discuss issues Chair EC psychology is our representative in national meeting of ECs

6 Ethics Committee Teacher Education
1/1/2019 Ethics Committee Teacher Education Members (nominated by director): Ellen Jansen (chair) Michelle Helms-Lorenz (vice-chair) Ruth Harmsen (new member) Vacancy (new member) Esther Hoorn (External legal member at the faculty level; ABJZ) NB: the EC is an advisory body

7 1/1/2019 Criteria 1. Are the research questions and the purpose of the research communicated clearly with the participants (Informed Consent and Folder)? 2. Are the chosen instruments adequate to answer the research questions? 3. Is the privacy of the persons (including teachers and student’s audio and visual content) and institutions sufficiently guaranteed? 4. Is the data management plan of the Nieuwenhuis Institute fulfilled? How long is the data stored? This is to prevent false data and plagiarism 5. Are there agreements regarding data sharing with internal and external partners? How is secrecy governed by all partners? 6. If third parties are engaged in data collection and analysis, how is the confidentiality settled? 7. Is the data ownership sufficiently clear? 8. Is the participant burden reasonable?

8 Procedure: when do you start?
1/1/2019 Procedure: when do you start? When required by a magazine, requested by the faculty (publication package), for a grant application For PhDs: when (ICO) promotion plan is ready, and subsequent studies are conducted (temporary) staff: when you start with a research or manuscript

9 Procedure: 2 of 2 You fill in a “notification form intended research”
1/1/2019 Procedure: 2 of 2 You fill in a “notification form intended research” and collect attachments (IC, confidentiality form etc) download from the website: notification form Mail this form to the Annemarie. You will receive a decision including explanation from the EC within 2 weeks.

10 1/1/2019 What does the EC not do? Does not provide research advice (regarding research methods, instruments or literature) Does not judge the quality of the research (plan), but checks Ethics criteria (you can do it yourself) The EC does not doubt the integrity of the investigator (s) or supervisors (making mistakes and forgetting can be corrected before it goes external, it’s normal to work imperfectly)

11 What does EC rejection mean ?
1/1/2019 What does EC rejection mean ? It means… That you have to fix something and have to resubmit a request after repair Repair advice is provided if needed but usually quite straightforward It does not mean… Anything else!

12 1/1/2019 Online tool The application form is also available in an online environment (our own initiative) EC is not yet convinced of the added value We are not going to implement this yet.

13 Data-management op y Research packages Publication packages
1/1/2019 Data-management op y Research packages Publication packages To prevent false data or plagiatism

14 Research package: PI is owner
1/1/2019 Research package: PI is owner Pre- and post stage of publication package In large scale projects this is very extensive See example, readme file and structure Syntax (with comments) plays a crucial role, transparant and replicable Data cleaning (create 1 variable using multiple variables with syntax, uniformizing different formats of variables, uniform variable names, omissions and outliers, etc. all with syntax) See page 7

15 Publication packages: authors are owners
1/1/2019 Publication packages: authors are owners Contains all data, syntaxes, and other important information needed to replicate results that are published in a scientific journal or book (chapter) PhDs: required for permission to defend thesis First authors organize shielding of y area via Annemarie By default, only the owners of the package have reading and writing rights. The research management team (Ellen, Michelle and Annemarie) and the director have reading rights of all packages

16 • A readme file explaining which files are included in the package
1/1/2019 • A readme file explaining which files are included in the package • The manuscript, report or book (chapter)  Information that is needed for others to understand your study: See page 5 Information that is needed for others to replicate your results: See page 6 Checklist on page 9

17 1/1/2019 Questions? Discussion: scientific validity and scientific relevance: difficult (impossible) to restrain opinion about the research design and chosen procedure to answer the research question Ethics issues not only salient in research but also in our work as teacher educators: case

18 1/1/2019 We need your support!

19 1/1/2019 Thank you!
