3. A Modest Proposal Overview
Written by Jonathan Swift in 1729, a Modest Proposal satirizes the wealthy English landlords for taking advantage and exploiting the Irish for their resources and labor, and trapping them in a cycle of poverty.

4. Logos
Logos is a literary device and an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Logos is used throughout “A Modest Proposal” through Swift’s use of statistics and facts, which makes it easy to understand and follow.

5. Quote #1:
“The number of souls in this kingdom being reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couples who are able to maintain their own children…”

Uses numbers, along with equations to create a logical appeal
Swift uses statistics to get his point across
Statistics make the point he’s making sound accurate and matter of fact, even though it isn’t

Appeals to logos by presenting the information in a logical and easy to understand fashion such as statistics.

“Infant’s flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more plentiful in March...reckoning a year before Lent; the markets will be more glutted than usual, because the number of popish infants is at least three to one in this kingdom…”

Instead of using numbers and statistics, this quote uses facts to persuade the audience
He is providing a “logical” solution to this problem, by saying he has already done the calculations and can conclude we will never run out of babies to eat

At the end his proposal, Swift summarizes his ideas using words like firstly, secondly, thirdly, etc, which organizes his ideas and presents them very logically and matter-of- factly and easy to follow, similar to a business proposal or plan.
