Plugs Minnesota Numeracy Initiative- applications due August 26
Kristin Klas Base 10 presentation- Tomorrow at 11:00.
3
Numeracy Confidence and skill to use numbers and numerical approaches in all aspects of life. Sometimes called “mathematical literacy”
4
Where are you at with numeracy?
Discuss: What do you teach? How do you incorporate numeracy into your ESL classes? How comfortable are you with teaching numeracy? Why is numeracy important for beginning ESL students?
5
Number Sense ????????
6
Number Sense Number sense essentially refers to a student's “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001). He/She has sense of what numbers mean, understands their relationship to one another, is able to perform mental math, understands symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real world situations.

Test Your Number Sense What do you think?
How many steps are in the Eiffel tower? How many grooves are around a dime? What’s the average number of times per minute a person blinks? How long, in miles, is the Nile River? How many seconds are in a year? Answer choices: 118 16 1665 4184 31,536,000 1665 118 16 4184 31,563,000 This is for an ABE teacher audience- how could we change these questions to be for a beginning ESL audience?
8
How did you arrive at your answer?
Background info? Units of measurement? Process of elimination? What is reasonable? Other strategies? Did you have background information? Did you use a process of elimination? Did you look at the units of measurement? Did you ask yourself, “What is reasonable?” · What other strategies did you use to find the right answer?

Mental Math
10
Mental Math 60% of everyday calculations involve estimates instead of precise calculations 85% of everyday calculations involve mental math rather than written math M. Nothcote
11
Mental Math None of this is to say that we shouldn’t teach written and abstract concepts in math, but that a firm foundation in mental math is a good place to start. -me

Estimation- Rounding Method
$9.97 $9.97 $9.97 Always ask the students to explain their process- this helps them practice math vocabulary as well as think through the process. Can you think of another example to use with beginning ESL students?
13
Estimation- Rounding Method
$ > $ $30.00 $ > $ $ > +$ $29.91 $30
14
Estimation- Front End Method
$1.29 $5.69 $3.97 What is your process? Can you think of another example to use with beginning ESL students?
15
Estimation Add the “front-end” first. $1 + $5 +$3= $9
Adjust the cents to find dollars. $ $0.69 is about a dollar. $0.97 is about a dollar. $9 + $1 + $1= $11 <---- Initial Estimate < <-----Adjustment <---- final estimate
