1 Opening Activity: Feb. 12, 2018 Have your homework: “Energy Scenarios” and Carbon Pool diagrams out for a stamp. Pick up TWO handouts at front table and tape in: Human Energy Systems Study Guide – Due 2/16 How do I use carbon? – Worksheet Fill out #1 on “How I use carbon” worksheet. We will revisit your thoughts later in class. I can… Apply matter and energy rules to Energy Story. Calculate and reflect your current carbon use. Homework: Human Energy Systems Test 2/16 Study Guide 2/16

2 Find your “Energy Story” Partner:
1. As a group of review your work: a. Why is this an energy use? What is the source of this energy? How do carbon atoms move as a result of this? 2. Review your story and diagrams: Do all parts of the story follow the matter & energy rules? Do carbon atoms ever disappear? When carbon leaves one pool, does it always enter another? 3. Answer #2 on “How I use organic carbon” worksheet. Describe each energy transfer.

3 Lifestyle Scenarios Visit all the stations around the room.
At each station read each lifestyle card and select a lifestyle that best fits your current lifestyle. Write your lifestyle on your worksheet in journal.

4 Calculate your Lifestyle Carbon Usage
Return to your table and calculate your carbon usage based on your lifestyle choice. What is your TOTAL carbon output?

5 Lifestyles and per capita emissions for different countries
The lifestyles described in the last activity were loosely based on average lifestyles for four countries. Which countries do you think are represented by lifestyle choices A, B, C, and D? What information are you using to guess?

7 Carbon dioxide emissions by country
Lifestyle Choice Country CO2 Emissions (lbs/yr/person) Weight in School Buses Volume in School Buses A United States 44,000 lbs 1.75 buses 157 buses B China 9,500 lbs 0.4 buses 34 buses C Ethiopia 220 lbs 0.01 buses 0.75 buses D France 14,600 lbs 0.6 buses 52 buses Which country emits the most? Which emits the least?

Use information you know about each country to suggest reasons for this variation.

9 Opening Activity: Feb. 13, 2018 Reflect on yesterday’s “Lifestyle Makeover” activity: You were allowed to make “choices” about your lifestyle. Which of these things do you make “choices” about everyday, and which of these things are determined by where you live? How much “choice” does a person living in Ethiopia have about how she or he uses carbon every day? Explain. What are the consequences for the environment if we continue with our current lifestyles in the United States? What are the consequences for people? I can… Create an argument for reducing carbon dioxide emissions Homework: Human Energy Systems Test 2/16 Study Guide 2/16

10 How are we going to lower carbon emissions?

(you just discussed lots of these) Write suggestions here

12 Opening Activity: Feb. 14, 2018 Sit with your “Hamilton Take Charge” group. Pick up a carbon commitment from table and complete. What actions will you take to reduce carbon? Grab a computer for your research today. Which scientific idea explains the following: The positive trend in the Keeling curve? How energy use leads to CO2 emissions? I can… Create an argument for reducing carbon dioxide emissions Homework: Human Energy Systems Test 2/16 Study Guide 2/16 Hamilton Take Charge – Due 2/16

13 Hamilton Take Charge Work Time
Make a claim Research your action, what specific evidence supports your claim? Justify how your data supports your claim. Justify how the data is explained by a scientific concept.

14 Opening Activity: Feb. 14, 2018 Sit with your “Hamilton Take Charge” group. Grab a computer if your group needs one today. Review your Arctic Sea Ice Initial Ideas. Use different color to make any changes: Use scientific concepts and terms to explain why the ice is melting. b. Answer any questions. I can… Create an argument for reducing carbon dioxide emissions Homework: Human Energy Systems Test 2/16 Study Guide 2/16 Hamilton Take Charge – Due 2/16
