Federalist Congress passed Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798 due to conflict over helping France: Allowed president to deport or arrest aliens speaking out against president or government Increased waiting period to become U.S. citizen from 5 to 14 years The law was a direct attack on the 1st amendment OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS
