[SPEAKER NOTE: If there is time, start with the group activity explained below]
We live in a time when we are more connected to other parts of the world than we have ever been before. We are lucky we live in Canada where we have good schools, good food and hospitals to look after us if we are sick So we are all in a position to help those who need our help QUESTIONS: Ask students for connections to countries outside (where their parents were born? Have they travelled outside Canada?) What are we doing to contribute to this kind of global community? After a few minutes, briefly review the answers. You may want to bring their attention to connections that they may not have identified. Conclude the exercise by stating that we live in a time where we are more connected to other parts of the world than we have ever been before.

Change IS Possible We are globally interconnected.
Global development works! In the last 20 years, there has been a 50% reduction in those living in extreme poverty But there is a NEED and OPPORTUNITY to do more. There are still ONE BILLION people living in extreme poverty We are all connected and we live on one world and we are helping each other and making a difference but hundreds of millions of people are still living in poverty People like you, your parents, your friends are making a difference and we can continue to do so and together and be part of the solution to end poverty in this world

World Partnership Walk
An initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada Canada’s largest public event to fight global poverty 10 cities across Canada A movement of globally minded Canadians that started in 1985 For Canada’s 150th anniversary, join us to make an even bigger difference in the world! So one of the ways our students can make a difference is to participate in The World Partnership Walk The Walk is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada — a registered Canadian charity and non-profit international development agency that works with communities in developing regions of the world, to find sustainable solutions to the complex problems of global poverty. The Walk is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to raising funds and awareness to end global poverty. It is a national movement of tens of thousands of Canadians who come together to have a global impact. For the last 30 years, thousands of Canadians from across the country have joined the World Partnership Walk to make a difference beyond our borders — and they ARE making a difference. In 2017, to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary and to mark our nation’s longstanding tradition of generosity, AKFC invites Canadians to step forward to raise funds and awareness and make an even bigger difference in the world!

He and his mother Betty sit together and read. Betty, who never finished high school, proudly watches as her son practices what he learns. Acidiri Let us look at some of the ways you are making a difference Meet Acidiri He and his mother Betty sit together and read. Betty, who never finished high school, proudly watches as her son practices what he learns. · Acidiri is from Uganda. · The cost of his education is approximately $35 a year. · Acidiri and his classmates saw their older siblings graduate from primary school barely able to read. · These kids are reaping the benefits of a new approach to education, including a richer learning environment, a more engaging curriculum and better training for their teachers. · AKFC supports programs to transform education in the region and help children like Acidiri. · Acidiri’s story is one of many that demonstrate how Canadians, people like you and I, are making a profound impact, by helping people improve their lives and their communities. 01/01/2019

HEALTH Meet Meet Nafiz She was delivered by a midwife who has helped mothers bring healthy babies safely into the world for 15 years. A $50 donation to the World Partnership Walk helps train a midwife to safely deliver a baby like Nafiz. · Nafiz was born in a hospital in Faizabad, Afghanistan. · She was underweight, with a blood infection and treated by Homa. · There are many women in Afghanistan that don’t have access to proper healthcare. By training midwives we are improving both maternal and newborn health conditions through increased access to health professionals. · AKFC supports midwife training to help children reach their full potential. This is a perfect example that shows just how far funds raised from the WPW can go. · Nafiz’s story is one of many that demonstrate how Canadians, people like you and I, are making a profound impact, by helping people improve their lives and their communities.
