A Silly Way to Look at Values in Art
How do we determine the difference between one value and another and where to place them in our drawing?
3
Lets start by looking at value scales…
4
The value scale on the top gradates from white to black while the one on the bottom is divided into steps.
5
When drawing…our marks will look more like the gradated values, but for this presentation we will look at the values in divided steps.
6
Let’s go one step simpler and divide the scale into six parts…
7
Imagine that for some silly reason you were asked to divide a group of men up according to their hair length into six categories…how would you go about this?
8
I know this is weird… bare with me…
9
You might start by putting all the bald men in one area…
10
And all the long-bearded, long -haired men in another…
11
Its easy to see a bald guy amongst long haired guys.
12
And vice versa
13
The task gets more difficult as you get closer to the medium lengths…
15
And more difficult…
17
You may “try out” the placement of a guy with a medium hair length next to another…the comparison can help you decide where he belongs. I think this guys hair is longer… …or is it?
18
When a medium gray value is next to black it looks quite light…when it is next to white it looks darker. Light Medium Dark
19
Using your clippers you could alter the hair length to make it shorter (lifting graphite from your paper with an eraser)…
20
You can also let the “hair” grow longer to make a value darker (adding more graphite to the paper).
21
When you are drawing you can alter a value by adding or lifting graphite from your paper’s surface to change the value.
22
Being aware of values and how they change according to what values surround them, or are next to them takes careful observation and comparison.
23
Putting accurate grays in the light and shadow of your drawings will make your drawing appear more realistic.
24
Can you see the analogy?
25
Now, try drawing with your new keenly observant eyes!
