1 The Northeastern States Blizzard of 1996

2 Characteristics 184 people were killed.
The sky was extremely white because of the intensity of the storm. 184 people were killed. Afterwards 9 states declared a state of emergency! The blizzard broke several records in many different states for the most snowfall in day.

3 Cause The blizzard began as cold air from Canada pushed down and collided with relatively warm winds from the Gulf of Mexico. People started preparing four days before the storm hit! The snow first began to fall in Washington DC on January 6th at about 9pm.

4 Effects Caused 3 billion dollars in damage. Caused major flooding.
6 airports were closed throughout the storm. Parts of Virginia recorded up to 4 feet of snow. Pennsylvania was the hardest hit of the affected states, with 1 billion dollars in damage and 80 deaths.

5 Blizzard Safety Tips STAY INSIDE!
Be prepared for power outages and blocked roads. Designate a spot to keep a bag of warm clothes. Stock up on snow removal gear.

7 Other Interesting Facts
One of only two snowstorms to be rated as 5, or “Extreme”. Deep shifts in the Jet Zone are one thing that made the blizzard possible. The blizzard was followed by another storm on Jan. 12, then unusually warm weather and torrential rain which caused rapid melting and river flooding.
