What is an invasive species?
An invasive species, or non-native species, is an organism that is not native to a location or ecosystem. The introduction of non-native species causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm, or harm to human health.

How do they get there? Ships: can carry aquatic organisms in their ballast water. Wood products: insects can get into wood, shipping crates, etc. Ornamental plants: some ornamental plants are introduced into the wild and become invasive. Pet trade: some species are intentionally or accidentally released pets.
