2. Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback: spID (Passport shot) Welcome to the Real Thing: I am glad to be beyond the maiden voyage. Start of the class is always confusing and stressful for students and the teacher alike. Most of the class procedure and requirement have been worked out leaving us to concentrate on the real work of this class. And that is to learn about photography with a core emphasis on story telling.

In the assignment example to the left, the white rectangle shows the full vertical image framing. The red dotted rectangle shows the square Passport cropping requirement. My white background is acceptable but not perfectly white. I expect some students to achieve a better white background…

Show the tripod… Good exposure and framing. Where was your camera in this scene? Good exposure and framing. Although there is evidence of a harder side light on the cheek. Ok exposure (did you engage HDR?). No overhand causing top light direction. Very good story but poor technique (under exposure). Good expression. Too closely cropped and poor technique (f/7.1 @ 1/80 = deep DOF) and composition shows wall with distracting detail. Great expression. Way too close and very weak technique (f/4.5 @ 1/8 and ISO 1400). The very slow shutter speed caused subject motion blur (eye blink?). Fair story but poor top-light direction.And the top of the head is to close to the edge causing a tangency

Use a wide and a horizontal framing the next time. Under exposed and shot using the normal. Use the wide and horizontal framing. Good exposure and framing except it is not showing the light which is creating the bottom catch light… Fair story and good technique. Although the background is not white (color shift?) nor texture less. This might make for an interesting photo but I asked for a Passport shot. Its framed way too tight and the eyes should be directed at the camera. Tight story and the image is over exposed. Look at the Histogram… Focus is okay but it might be slightly back focused. Check it out…

Slightly under and shot using normal. Use wide the next time. And show tripod. Under exposed but good use of wide. Try showing the tripod next time. Very good framing but poor technique and expression. It is under exposed even with the bias +1 with f/3.2 @ 1/125. Zoom is set to normal but needed 18 to 22mm telephoto. Excellent Passport framing, expression, and technique. Smoother background and wearing a dark gray would have worked better. Little tight and the wide distorted the image making the glasses look way over sized. The image size remained 480x 640, unchanged from the class EC test

7. Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Bottom Line: Square format The red dotted square shape is the Passport image shape requirement. Notice that many of the assignment shots did not meet the Passport image shape requirement. Shooting to a square shape seems like an easy task. But, it is not so easy when involved in doing real photography. Some obvious things tend to get overlooked. That is why I encourage the use of Auto settings and also to use the require doc as a check list. If you have to, put it on a 3x5 card. And be sure to use it as a check list.
