Encourages couples to come to their own decisions through agreement Mediation, counselling aim to reduce conflict and avoid court action, saves money and time Family Dispute Resolution Centres Use collaborative approach (rather than adversarial) to solve family law issues Couples must obtain a certificate from a practitioner before applying for a divorce This does NOT apply in cases where family violence/child abuse is alleged
