6 Chapter 2 Turkey

7 Co-operation with Turkey
USST programme ”Upgrading the Statistical System of Turkey” (USST) 3 phases, about 9 years Many statistical fields, including regional and urban statistics

8 26 UA cities in Turkey code city population TR001C Ankara 3,203,362
Kars 78,473 TR002C Adana 1,130,710 TR015C Kastamonu 64,606 TR003C Antalya 603,190 TR016C Kayseri 539,870 TR004C Balıkesir 215,436 TR017C Kocaeli 195,699 TR005C Bursa 1,194,687 TR018C Konya 742,690 TR006C Denizli 275,480 TR019C Malatya 381,081 TR007C Diyarbakır 545,983 TR020C Manisa 214,345 TR008C Edirne 119,298 TR021C Nevşehir 67,864 TR009C Erzurum 361,235 TR022C Samsun 363,180 TR010C Gaziantep 853,513 TR023C Siirt 98,281 TR011C Hatay 144,910 TR024C Trabzon 214,949 TR012C İstanbul 8,803,468 TR025C Van 284,464 TR013C İzmir 2,232,265 TR026C Zonguldak 104,276

9 Map of 26 UA cities in Turkey

10 The weight of the 26 cities
One city in each Statistical region at level 2 The population cover 34% of the national population Istanbul alone covers 13% of national population

11 LUZ and SCD Each city has a Larger Urban Zone
Istanbul: province of Istanbul = LUZ Other cities: one or more districts (LAU 1) constitute the LUZ Wards in cities (“mahalle”) will be used as Sub-City Districts Some wards must be grouped together. Difficult to split wards, because no data available at lower level

12 Conclusions The co-operation with Turkey can serve as a model for future Candidate Countries Depends on a general co-operation framework (USST for Turkey, PHARE for Bulgaria and Romania) Urban Audit serves as EU harmonisation in many thematic fields Everything takes longer time than expected!

13 Chapter 3 Geographic data

14 Which maps are available
City boundaries Boundaries of the LUZ Source of map data: SABE (commune boundaries for Europe) Available in the GISCO database (Geographical Information System for the COmmission)

15 Maps of Sub-City Districts
Maps of Sub-City Districts have to be sent from Member States and PHARE countries Integrated into a common GIS (GISCO) Technical work done at DG REGIO Problems with lack of information about projection (necessary for creation of a common European map)

16 Missing maps Austria, France, Greece (DG REGIO due to pay for the SCD maps) UK – wrong set of Wards Bulgaria, Romania – whole cities not covered by SCD Some German cities - lack of information about projection (needed for integration into common European map)
