1 7.1 Experiments, Sample Spaces, & Events
UNIT 7 - Probability 7.1 Experiments, Sample Spaces, & Events

2 An event is a subset of a sample space.
Terminology An experiment is an activity with observable results (called outcomes). A sample point is an outcome of an experiment. The sample space is the set of all possible sample points. An event is a subset of a sample space.

3 Ex 1. Rolling a die Sample Space: Event A: rolling an even number Event B: rolling an odd number Event C: rolling a multiple of 3

4 A  B B  C Cc A  C

5 Events A and B are mutually exclusive if
A  B = . Give an example of mutually exclusive events if choosing a student in ICM at random. A and B are complementary events if B = Ac.

6 Ex 2. An experiment consists of spinning the hand on the disk below two times. Find the sample space. P C W

7 Ex 4. An experiment consists of rolling 2 dice
Ex 4. An experiment consists of rolling 2 dice. Describe the sample space.

8 Non-discrete sample spaces
Ex 5. Mrs. Cholkar observes how long it takes students to take a test. Describe sample space if they are given the entire class period with no extended time. Describe the event that it takes a student between 30 and 45 minutes, inclusive.
