The Rock Cycle Rock – a naturally occurring solid mixture containing one or more minerals
2
What is a rock? A rock is a mixture of such minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials. Most rock used for building stone contains one or more common minerals, called rock-forming minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, mica, or calcite When you look closely, the sparkles you see are individual crystals of minerals.
3
What is the difference between a rock & a mineral?
Minerals are solid, naturally occurring, inorganic, have a fixed composition and are made of one or more elements. Rocks are made of one or more minerals.
4
What is the rock cycle? To show how rocks slowly change through time, scientists have created a model called the rock cycle. It illustrates the processes that create and change rocks.
5
Rock Cycle Continued The rock cycle shows the three types of rock— igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary—and the processes that form them.
6
The Rock Cycle Weathering – the process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity break down rock into sediment. Erosion: The process by which soil and sediment is transported from one location to another.
7
The Rock Cycle Deposition – the process in which material is dropped and comes to rest…deposited.

Weathering: the process by which ______________, _________________, __________________, or ________________break down rock into sediment. Erosion: The process by which __________and sediment is ___________ from one location to another. Deposition: the process in which material is ______________and comes to rest The Rock Cycle!
13
Recycling Rocks! Did you know that rocks are constantly being recycled? Recycle means to take something old and change into something new. Some of the Earth’s oldest rocks that have been around for more than four billion years are being changed into different rocks. The rock cycle takes millions of years.
14
What is the law of conservation of matter?
Law of conservation of matter states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. The changes that take place in the rock cycle never destroy or create matter. The elements are just redistributed in other forms.
15
Can be formed from solutions
Made of elements Must be inorganic Can be made from organic materials Solid Can be made of lava/ magma Made only of compounds Elements must be chemically bonded Mixtures made of minerals Have crystals Can be man made Naturally occurring Can be formed from solutions
