1 Effective slide designing

2 Empty space can convey a feeling of: - quality - sophistication - importance

3 Impact! Clarity Simplicity 3
Simplicity gives rise to clarity gives rise to impact! Simplicity 3

4 Avoid slides like these…………………

5 Back grounds Paragraphs Because….

6 You end up like this

7 What is this?

8 A slide should convey the message in 4 seconds

9 Never write in red in blue back ground
Do not place red and green together. Color blinds do not see them seperately

10 Use of colour and CAPITALS
Don’t EVER write in RED on a blue background or in BLUE on a red background The human eye cannot focus on red and blue together, so one of the colours will appear to be “behind” the other

11 and RED to highlight text
Use of colour DON’T use GREEN and RED to highlight text or GREEN and RED in a graph 5% of your audience may not be able to distinguish them, because they are the two worst colours for colour blind people

12 Avoid 3D as much as possible.
Bad colours What is the message?

13 So the good slides………….

14 A good slide Maximum six words and four sentences No clutter
No sentences but meaningful bullet points Minimum text Correct, easy to ready fonts – here we use Verdana use sans sheriff font A simple, sensible and complimentary colour palate Font size – over 28

Year Dry Zone Wet Zone Arid Zone 1990 134 415 312 2000 357 1078 602 2010 715 2021 1009 Table arranged in correct way for easy reading. In here data are given chronologically Numbers are right Tables are shown only when precise numbers matter.

16 However, graphics can convey the trend…..
Same data in graph conveys another message, the trend Reported water rights disputes in three zones of Sri Lanka

17 Is there seasonality? Pilchard density (Number/m3)
Incorrect scale of Y axis dampens fluctuations and leads one to believe there is no seasonality

18 Seasonality Pilchard density (Number/m3)
Appropriate Y axis scale SHOWS seasonality and hopefully that’s what you are SAYING. The figure complements the narrative, but doesn’t replace it.

19 72% of the part –time workers are women
Powerful images to convey messages than use of text

20 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese
Animation is used only when necessary
