1 Natural Events and Human Activities Cause Changes In Ecosystems.
Unit 1, Chapter 3 Natural Events and Human Activities Cause Changes In Ecosystems.

2 Sections 3.1 – Natural disturbances and succession
Ecosystems can change due to floods, landslides, etc. The process by which a biological community changes over time is called succession.

3 In Newfoundland, we live in the Boreal Forest
In Newfoundland, we live in the Boreal Forest. After sucession occurs here, we have a forest climax community. Climax Community – Is a ecosystem that doesn’t change for many years.

4 Pioneer Species – A species that grow with little or no soil and few nutrients. Examples include: Mosses, Lichens, and Bacteria.

5 Primary vs. Secondary Succession
Primary Succession – Is growth in an area that starts with bare rock. Secondary Succession – Is growth in an area that has had a major distrubance. Soil is already present.

6 Primary Succession

7 Secondary Succession

8 Research a endangered or threatened organism.

9 How have humans affected their environment.

10 What are the Pros and Cons of Habitat conservation?
1. The resourse will be around for many years to come. 1. Artificial Habitats 2. Preservation of biodiversity 2. Economic loss (job loss) 3. Eco-Tourism 3. Limited human use.

11 Many times things happen in nature that we can’t help with science.
Decline in cod stocks. Oil slicks/spills. Acid rain.
