2 New Beginnings Creating relationships with: Teachers Coaches
Classmates Peers Relationships for new students: with teachers (expectations, etc) coaches: sports that students are interested in, classmates: groups, new friends, etc. Start out by saying that relationships are the most important for new students coming into our school because…

3 Our Job is to… Connect Befriend Familiarize Inform Sell the program
22 members. They are all involved in different clubs, sports, musical things, etc.

4 Acceptance/Trust Critical time for new students = first two weeks
Total Acceptance Develop trust – be open and honest Need to make new students feel at home The first two weeks are critical because the students are just getting used to the classes, campus, etc. ? Verbal: what you say (“Hey, what’s up?” etc…) Nonverbal: body language

5 Process for Helping New Students
1. Meet counselor 2. Connect them to an S2S team member 3. Tour 4. “Lunch Buddy” Monthly Rewind activities Follow-up Connected at new student orientation, when tours are given, etc. Student sits with the team member at lunch New students are invited to our monthly rewind activities

6 Finding the Way Campus Community Culture Academics Getting involved
Campus: getting around, procedures, people, barriers, key areas Community: what’s going on, where to go, where teens can hang out, what happens here Culture: customs, celebrations, foods, diversity, languages Academics: requirements, processes, eligibility Getting involved: clubs, sports, etc

Learn awareness/how to implement program Addressing new student needs

8 Team Meetings Discuss new student concerns Planning and brainstorming
It’s important that as we want to have good relationships with our new students, we need to have good relationships with team members as well

Held a week before school starts Parents and students connect High School tour Ice-breakers SHS Survival Guide Scavenger hunt Eat lunch NSO: to introduce new students to the school, allow them to meet the team, etc

11 Rewinds Food, Fun and Facts!
Introductions Ice breakers and Games Eat lunch Share information Team members introduce themselves to the students, talk to them during the rewind, find common interests, etc New students introduce themselves Ice breakers and games are played to get the new students comfortable Upcoming school events such as homecoming, fundraiser, etc…

Make new friends Games and candy More connections Buddies for the game

13 Game Nights Meet up before the game
New students have someone to hang out with

14 Conclusion Relationships are the foundation of what we do
Our team is passionate Our goal is to help every new student of Steilacoom High School transition smoothly and feel comfortable in their new environment And, to do this, relationships are the most important aspect of S2S
