AGENDA Warm – Up : Complete “DO NOW” on guided notes page.
8/12/2015 Warm – Up : Complete “DO NOW” on guided notes page. Objective(s): Describe seven themes that can help you to organize what you learn about biology. 7 min AGENDA Enter the classroom silently and find your seat. Essentials: Pen or pencil, GN, Characteristics of Life packet. Write down homework in your planner. WARM- UP Wait silently for instructions
2
Beetle and You List all the characteristics that you have in common with this beetle.
3
Beetle comparison Eat Grow Specific body parts related to function Mobile Respond to the environment Produce offspring
4
Objective of the day Describe seven themes that can help you to organize what you learn about biology.
5
Statement of Inquiry/IB Trait
The relationship between the structure and function of our parts is one way that we define what it means to be human. IB TRAIT: Thinkers, communicators and inquirers.
6
Homework Complete the characteristics of life worksheet. All answers must be in complete sentences or they will be counted wrong! Due tomorrow! Not the day we meet next!
7
Biology – The Study of Life
Life arose more than 3.5 billion years ago First organisms (living things) were single celled Only life on Earth for millions of years Organisms changed over time (evolved)
8
New organisms arose from older kinds
Today there are millions of species They inhabit almost every region of Earth today
9
Unifying Themes of Biology
10
Themes of Biology Cell structure and function
Stability and homeostasis Reproduction and inheritance Evolution Interdependence of organisms Matter, energy, and organization
11
Cell Structure and Function
Cell basic unit of life All organisms are made of and develop from cells Some composed of only a single cell (unicellular) which is usually identical to parent
12
Cells Most organisms are composed of many cells (multicellular)
Cells are different (undergo differentiation) Cells are small Cells are highly organized
13
Cells contain specialized structures (organelles) that carry out the cell’s life processes
Many different kinds of cells exist All cells surrounded by a plasma membrane Contain a set of instructions called DNA (genetic information)
14
Stability and Homeostasis
Organisms must Maintain very stable internal conditions - HOMEOSTASIS Temperature, water content, chemical content, etc. must be maintained
15
Reproduction and Inheritance
All organisms produce new organisms like themselves REPRODUCE Organisms transmit hereditary information to their offspring INHERITANCE
16
DNA Genetic Information in all cells Deoxyribonucleic Acid
DNA contains instructions for traits GENES Make the structures and complex chemicals necessary for life PROTEINS DNA in every body cell (SOMATIC CELLS) is exactly alike
17
Sexual Reproduction Egg and sperm zygote (fertilized egg)
Hereditary information from two different organisms of the same species are combined Egg and sperm zygote (fertilized egg) Zygote contains hereditary information from both parents
18
Asexual Reproduction Hereditary information from one, usually unicellular, organism that divides Resulting cells contain identical hereditary information Genetic information from single parent
19
Evolution Populations of organisms change (evolve) over generations (time) Explains how many different kinds of organisms came into existence SPECIES Explains how modern organisms are related to past organisms
20
Explains why organisms look and behave the way they do
Provides a basis for exploring the relationships among different groups of organisms

Natural Selection Natural selection is the driving force in evolution Organisms that have certain favorable traits are better able to successfully reproduce than organisms that lack these traits Copyright Cmassengale
22
Natural Selection Survival of organisms with favorable traits cause a gradual change in populations over many generations Also Called “Survival of the Fittest”
23
Interdependence of Organisms
Interaction of organisms with one another and with their environment ECOLOGY Insects depend and flowers DEPEND on each other for food & pollination COEVOLUTION
24
All organisms need substances such as nutrients, water, and gases from the environment
The stability of the environment depends on the healthy functioning of organisms in that environment
25
Guided Practice Is it living or nonliving?
In this lab, you will observe several objects to determine if they are living or nonliving. OBJECTIVES Compare living and nonliving things. Identify traits common to living things
26
Guided Practice Living or non living
Guided Practice Living or non living? In your notes packet answer the following 10 min 1. Which specimens are alive? Dead? Nonliving? 2. What do living things have in common? 3. How do nonliving things differ from living things? 4. Were there traits that you know are common to living things that you were unable to observe? If so, what methods or conditions might allow you to observe these traits? 5. Evaluating Results In what ways did your previous knowledge about what items are living or dead influence you as you were doing this lab? *Each person needs to work for him/herself.
27
Guided Practice Living or non living?
3 min Ask scholars to grade their work while you go over the answers. Turn and talk in your table groups about your answer and why it was different. Voice Level 1 Each person needs to work for yourself but discuss as table group.
28
Insert Brain Break here
3 min Insert Brain Break here Rock paper scissors tournament!
29
Independent Practice 10 min Complete the Independent Practice worksheet in your guided notes Write down as many of the seven themes in biology that are illustrated by this figure Voice Level 0
30
Exit Ticket 5 min Complete the exit ticket silently and stack at your table group when you are finished. You may pack up your things.
31
STOP Cards S Summarize: Summarize the day’s lesson and what we learned. T Trait: What IB trait relates to the lesson? O Objective: Re-state in your own words and say whether or not we met that objective for the day. P Purpose: What was the purpose of this lesson?
32
Exit Procedure SILENTLY Pack up all of your things.
Wait for teach directions to: Push in your chair. Form a line at the door. Silently exit the classroom. Hallways are a Level 1 (whisper)
