2 Unit 11 Vocabulary Grudge – a resentment strong enough to justify retaliation. No matter what the Montague’s will always hold a grudge towards the Capulet’s. Portentous– of momentous or ominous significance. The envelope and its portentous contents were lost in the mail. Forswear – formally reject or disavow a formerly held belief. He would never forswear his family’s name. Prick – make a small hole into, as with a needle or a thorn. It was only a prick that would cost Mercutio his life. Consent – give an affirmative reply to; respond favorably to. Romeo married Juliet without the consent of her father.

Vain – unproductive of success. Even though their hearts desired to be together, their efforts were in vain. Scorn – lack of respect accompanied by a feeling of intense dislike. Tybalt viewed Romeo at their party as scorning at their “solemnity”. Solemnity – a trait of dignified seriousness. Romeo viewed his love for Juliet with great solemnity. Strife – a bitter conflict, a rivalry, a violent struggle . Romeo and Juliet’s love was met with great strife. Tyrant – a cruel and oppressive dictator, any person who exercises power in a cruel manner. Lord Capulet was viewed as a tyrant by the readers of the play.

Kinsmen – relatives, close family members. Romeo and his kinsmen decided to crash Capulet’s party. Vain – unproductive of success. The boy told the girl he loved her but his actions were in vain. Spite – a feeling of ill will, malevolence, or malicious feelings prompting an urge to hurt or humiliate. Tybalt went against his uncle to spite him. Pernicious – wicked; or being exceedingly harmful, tending to cause death or serious injury. Tybalt’s pernicious actions led to his demise. Forfeit – something that is lost or surrendered as a penalty. Due to his unlawful killing of Tybalt, Romeo’s life was forfeitted.

Shun – to avoid and stay away from deliberately. The people of Verona were ordered to shun Romeo for killing Tybalt. Boisterous – noisy and lacking in restraint or discipline. The Capulet party celebrating Juliet’s marriage to County Paris was quite boisterous. Counsel – something that provides direction or advice. Romeo and Juliet both sought counsel over their secret love. Bound – to be held to one’s word by a promise, contract, or oath. Lord Capulet ordered Juliet be bound to County Paris as his wife. Anguish – causing extreme mental distress or physical pain, torment. Juliet was in anguish when she found out she could not marry Romeo.
