2 Railway Wheel End Monitor Lay-Out & Status
BeWag AG Namur Presented by: Marc Petit – Railway Business Unit Manager Date: Title slide [Title Slide] The title slide is available as a ‘title master’ and therefore the background is fixed. Text is editable. The presentation title is always SKF Red on a white background and set in SKF Chevin Light. Who the presentation is for, the presenter’s name and date is white out of SKF Blue and set in SKF Chevin Demi Bold. Footer details are also white out of SKF Blue and set in Verdana. The SKF Supergraphic is also positioned on the ‘title master’ slide in a fixed position. Embedding of SKF Chevin fonts The SKF Chevin fonts can be embedded within a PowerPoint presentation, ensuring that the presentation may be viewed correctly when appearing on a computer which does not have these fonts installed. The process of embedding these fonts differs between versions of PowerPoint®: PowerPoint 97 – check the ‘Embed TrueType’ box which appears in the ‘Save As…’ dialog, then click ‘OK’ to save normally. PowerPoint 2000 – select ‘Embed TrueType Fonts’ from the ‘Tools’ menu in the ‘Save As…’ dialog, then click ‘OK’ to save normally. PowerPoint 2002/2003 – check ‘Embed TrueType fonts’ and then select one of the two embedding options (‘Embed all characters’ or ‘Embed characters in use only’) from ‘Save Options’ under the ‘Tools’ menu in the ‘Save As…’ dialog. Note: Embedding fonts does not install the font on the end user’s computer, so the fonts will only be available for the presentation in which they are embedded. Only TrueType fonts can be embedded in PowerPoint presentations

3 Railway Wheel End Monitor (R-WEM) A New Tool for Kilometre Counting
Problem today: Freight cars have today normally no integrated km counter. New requirements about documentation of mileage of wheelsets result in the need of accurate knowledge of kilometre usage. Therefore a new device has been developed which detects and counts electronically the wheelset revolutions for calculation and storage of km data. Main Features: Kilometre Counter. Additional data storage for maintenance data of wheelsets. Wireless data reading and downloading.

4 Functions of R-WEM Battery powered kilometer counter.
R-WEM has enough free memory in its processor for Extra Data: Wheel manufacturer Axle manufacturer Serial number wheel / axle Manufacturing date : wheels / axle / assembly Maintenance operations : what / when / who Extra inspections : what / when / who Simple and easy data programming and downloading: R-WEM has a low power radio on board which is normally in ‘off’ mode. This radio is switched on ONLY when data is downloaded resp. programmed in the workshop.

5 R-WEM Principle Sketch
R-WEM electronic is embedded in the central end cap hole. The electronic part is fixed by screws to the locking plate. An internal non rechargeable battery is used as power supply. The battery can be used between -25°C and + 90°C (- 40°C under investigation). Battery life is designed to be 8 years.

6 Problem: Wheelset Turning
During wheel reprofiling a free access to the centering hole in the axle journal is needed. There is a potential risk of mixing and/or forgetting R-WEM during this operation.

7 Improved R-WEM Lay-Out Suitable for wheel turning lathes
The electronic is movable but still fixed to the endcap

8 Improved R-WEM Lay-Out Suitable for wheel turning lathes
Position of R-WEM when axle is ready for wheel turning

11 Customer Values Cost Saving by:
Conveyor wheel Cost Saving by: Improved maintenance by change to km based. Knowledge about km ‘consumption’ of leasing customers. Simplified administration by electronic data storage. Reading temperature history allows to plan maintenance. ©SKF Slide 11 [Code] SKF [Organisation]

12 R-WEM Status Status: Lay-Out already fixed. Laboratory tests ongoing.
Counting principle successfully tested. First prototype under assembly. First small series for field test available since end of 2010.
