Where and When It Began Britain in the late 1700s. Britain was rich and wanted to get wealthier and more powerful. They did this through inventions that would improve how they manufactured goods.

The Industrial Revolution spread throughout Europe in the 19th century (1800s).

Population Growth As industrialization continued, the population grew in Europe. This was due to better nutrition and better health services. Due to these advances and changes, the death rate fell . A larger population meant a higher need for production.

Transportation Excellent navy ships made it possible to transport a higher amount of goods. A vast canal network could get more goods back and forth through the waters Barges (flat boats) made transport possible in areas.

Mechanization of Textile Production
The British had always spun and weaved textiles (cloth) using their sheep’s wool but cotton became more popular. There was such a high demand for cotton that they imported it from countries that used slavery in the cotton fields so that they could make a bigger profit. Making cloth by hand was too slow a process so they needed to invent machines to do it faster.

The spinning wheel could only fill one spool at a time. With the spinning mule (powered by a water wheel), they could fill thirty at a time.
