20 Overview of Luke 1:26-56 Angel Gabriel sent to Mary vv.26-38
Gabriel announces Mary’s Child Mary’s interaction Mary seeks out Elizabeth vv.39-56 Elizabeth blesses Mary Mary’s Song of Praise to God

21 Luke 1:26-27 – Gabriel’s Mission
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

22 Luke 1:28-30 – Gabriel’s Greeting
28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

23 Luke 1:31-33– Gabriel’s Message
31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

24 Luke 1:34 – Mary’s Question
34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

25 Luke 1:35 – Gabriel’s Explanation p.1
35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

26 Luke 1:36-37 – Gabriel’s Explanation p.2
36 “And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

27 Luke 1:38– Mary’s Acceptance
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

28 Gabriel’s Message: It’s a Boy! x2
Zacharias Mary Priest Poor commoner Older man Young woman In Jerusalem – at the Temple In Nazareth – at home Doubt Faith Read Luke 1:26-38 – Gabriel’s visit to Mary

29 Mary Was Not Surprised by Gabriel’s Prophecies But She Was Surprised It Was Her
She raised no objection or question about prophecies Other prophesied sons Mary would have known about Isaac – born to Sarah and Abraham Samuel – born to Hannah and Elkanah She grew up in a more Biblically-literate culture than 21st century America

30 Table Talk Cultural Context – In the years shortly before Jesus’ birth, the Jews had some expectation of a Messiah. What do we know about that expectation? Hint: From this passage, Luke 1:26-56, what did Mary hear/know/understand? Hint 2: Think Old Testament.

31 Cultural Context: Abrahamic Covenant
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1–3)

32 Cultural Context: Davidic Covenant
12 “When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever…. 16 “Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ” (2 Samuel 7:12–13, 16)

33 Cultural Context: The Prophets p.1
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

34 Cultural Context: The Prophets p.2
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9)

35 Cultural Context: The Prophets p.3
I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10)

36 Cultural Context: New Covenant p.1
31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and

37 Cultural Context: New Covenant p.2
on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

38 Now, Back to Mary Teenager, poor, engaged, descendant of David
Why would an angel come to greet her? This had her perplexed. In what way was she “highly favored” (“greatly graced”) by God? How was God with her? Gabriel made some amazing prophecies – They didn’t seem to shock her

39 Gabriel’s Prophecy to Mary
You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

40 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High”
Mary could not have missed the significance of that terminology. The fact that her Baby was to be called the “Son of the Most High” pointed to His equality with Yahweh. In Semitic thought a son was a “carbon copy” of his father, and the phrase “son of” was often used to refer to one who possessed his “father’s” qualities. (Bible Knowledge Commentary)

41 Mary’s One Question: How will this be?
The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

42 “Overshadowed” ??? His body was prepared for Him by the Spirit of God (Heb. 10:5) who “overshadowed” Mary. That word is applied to the presence of God in the holy of holies in the Jewish tabernacle and temple (Ex. 40:35). Mary’s womb became a holy of holies for the Son of God! (Bible Knowledge Commentary)

43 Mary Rushed to See Elizabeth
She traveled (alone?) from Nazareth to somewhere near Jerusalem. That would be 93 miles on the Yitzhak Rabin Highway (thru Samaria). The more likely route was 120 miles along Jordan River.

44 Elizabeth’s Response p.1
41Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 she cried out with a loud voice “Blessed are you among women, blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 “And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?

45 Elizabeth’s Response p.2
44 “For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. 45 “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”

46 Mary’s Praise – Part 1 - Personal
46 “My soul exalts the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 “For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. 49 “For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.

47 Mary’s Praise – Part 2 – All People
50 “And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him. 51 “He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. 52 “He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble. 53 “He has filled the hungry with good things; And sent away the rich empty-handed.

48 Mary’s Praise – Part 3 - Israel
54 “He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy, 55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever.”

49 Table Talk When it comes to Mary, people tend to go to one of two extremes. They either magnify her so much that Jesus takes second place (Luke 1:32), or they ignore her and fail to give her the esteem she deserves (Luke 1:48). (Warren Wiersbe, Bible Exposition Commentary) How should we view Mary? What applications can we learn from Mary in this passage?

50 How Should We View Mary? Elizabeth, filled with the Spirit, called her “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43); and that is reason enough to honor her. (Warren Wiersbe, Bible Exposition Commentary)

51 Closing Please read and meditate on Luke 1: Bob Sibert will be leading us next week.

52 Additional Slides

53 Gabriel’s Prophecy to Mary
You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” Observe – the last two have not been fulfilled yet!!

54 Table Talk Of Gabriel’s prophecy to Mary, What has been fulfilled?
What is left to be fulfilled? When will it all be fulfilled?

55 When Will All This Be Fulfilled?
Jesus came to earth to be the Saviour of the world, but He also came to fulfill the promises God made to the Jewish fathers (Rom. 15:14). Today, Jesus is enthroned in heaven (Acts 2:29–36), but it is not on David’s throne. One day Jesus will return and establish His righteous kingdom on earth, and then these promises will be fulfilled. (Warren Wiersbe, Bible Exposition Commentary)

56 When Will All This Be Fulfilled? p.2
Jesus, as David’s descendant, will sit on David’s throne when He reigns in the Millennium Jesus’ reign over the nation Israel as her King will begin in the Millennium and continue on into the eternal state. (Bible Knowledge Commentary)
