1 Parts of Speech

2 Noun Person, Place, Thing or idea The dog was chasing his tail.

3 Verb A word that shows action or state of being Example: Larry ran to the store. Larry is a man.

4 A word of description (modifies nouns)
Adjective A word of description (modifies nouns) Larry always wears a yellow shirt to dinner.

5 Adverb A word that modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb. (hint, often ends with “ly”) Jill wrote quickly to get all of the notes in her notebook.

6 (He could stand for John for example)
Pronoun A “substitute” noun He will receive an “A” in English this year. (He could stand for John for example)

7 Tells that the word that follows is a noun
Article Tells that the word that follows is a noun The Mercedes Benz was involved in an accident.

8 Interjection! a word that shows strong feelings like excitement, happiness, horror, shock, or pain Wow! That is an amazing score on your test!

9 Darla like apples and oranges.
Conjunctions A word that connects words, phrases or clauses. Includes: and, but & or Darla like apples and oranges.

10 Prepositions Prepositions show how one word is related to another. They tell 1) where something is; 2) where something is going; 3) when something happens 4) relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in a sentence.

11 Prepositions The girl is from Europe.
Common Prepositions: aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, alongside, among, around, as, at, before, behind, below, beneath, besides, besides, between, beyond, by, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, round, since, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, without The girl is from Europe.
