FLT Given a photosynthesis role play
I will be able to model the steps of the light reaction and calvin cycle through manipulates and partner

Everyone will take part in our photosynthesis theather Part 1--Actors 1) Photosystem II 2) ETC 3) Last ETC 4) Photosystem I 5) ATP synthase 6) Sun 7) Stroma 8) Water 9) ADP (also in part III) 10) NADP+(also in part III) 11) Thylakoid space

Roles for Part I Sun: Holds flashlight and shines it on Photosystems PS II: passes e- cards to last ETC ETC: Passes e- cards along line and pumps H+ cards over shoulder to thylakoid space PS I: Passes e- cards to LAST ETC WATER: Passes e- cards to PS II THYLAKOID SPACE: Receives H+ cards from ETC and passes H+ cards to ATP synthase ATP SYNTHASE: receives H+ cards from thylakoid space and passes them to stroma; holds P cards and attaches them to ADP. LAST ETC: collects all e- cards as they come down line, receives H+ from stroma and gives 2 e- cards and attaches an H+ to NADP+ ACT OUT ETC first. Where is this happening? What are the jobs? Where do electrons come from to replace those lost from PS II? Where do ATP and NADPH go next?
7
Arrange yourselves Students wear appropriate name tags and line up in correct position. Photosystem II, ETC, ETC, ETC, Photosystem I, ETC, ATP synthase stand in a line Sun stands to side of PS II. Stroma stands in front of line. Water stands next to thylakoid space. ADP stands near ATP synthase NADP+ stands near ATP synthase and last ETC

Actors—Calvin Cycle 5 Actors: 1 CO2
ATP and NADPH from light reactions 1 Stroma 1 RuBP Stroma, “Hi, I’m stroma. The Calvin Cycle happens around me” CO2 enters and high fives stroma, “Hi, I’m CO2” (circle stroma) RuBP enters and high fives stroma “Hi, I’m RuBP” (circle stroma CO2 and RuBP link arms . Both say “We are joined by RUBISCO. We are now a 6 carbon molecule. Too bad we are unstable. Let’s become two 3 carbon molecules. Just call us PGA.” ATP removes its P and says “I am now ADP and are low energy. Back to the light reaction.” NADPH removes its H+ and passes it and 2 e- cards to STROMA. “I am now NADP+ and are missing electrons. Back to the light reaction.” STROMA takes 2 e- and H+ from NADPH, and energy and P from ATP. STROMA yells ”I need 2 more CO2 and RuBP so I can make G3P and recycle RuBP”

Part II SPLITTING WATER: Assign 8 students to be water molecules in THYLAKOID SPACE. Each starts wearing an O card with 2 H's attached and holds 2 e- cards. As water is split, the H+ cards are detached and are passed to the THYLAKOID SPACE. The 2 e- cards pass to PS II, and the leftover O holds hands and joins with another O to become O2 and leaves the chloroplast (room).

A five-carbon sugar molecule called ribulose bisphosphate, or RuBP, is the acceptor that binds CO2 dissolved in the stroma. This process, called CO2 fixation, is catalyzed by the enzyme RuBP carboxylase, forming an unstable six-carbon molecule. This molecule quickly breaks down to give two molecules of the three-carbon 3-phosphoglycerate (3PG), also called phosphoglyceric acid (PGA). 2. The two 3PG molecules are converted into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P, a.k.a. phosphoglyceraldehyde, PGAL) molecules, a three-carbon sugar phosphate, by adding a high-energy phosphate group from ATP, then breaking the phosphate bond and adding hydrogen from NADH + H+. 3. Three turns of the cycle, using three molecules of CO2, produces six molecules of G3P. However, only one of the six molecules exits the cycle as an output, while the remaining five enter a complex process that regenerates more RuBP to continue the cycle. Two molecules of G3P, produced by a total of six turns of the cycle, combine to form one molecule of glucose. G3P C phosphoglycerate C C C 3C C = C C C 6 ADP 6 ATP 2.
