Weather Vocabulary Set #1
2
Weather Daily conditions of the atmosphere in terms of temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind and moisture
3
Atmosphere Blanket (surrounds/covers) of gas on the surface of a planet or satellite 78% Nitrogen (N) 21% Oxygen (O2) 1% other gases
4
Pollutant Any substance (as certain chemicals or waste products) that renders the air, soil, water, or other natural resource harmful or unsuitable for a specific purpose Renders means make Example: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
5
Air Pressure Mercury Barometer
The force exerted (effects) on you by the weight of tiny particles of air (air molecules). Weather instrument that measures air pressure is a barometer. Two types of barometers: Mercury barometer Aneroid barometer Aneroid Barometer
6
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air
Water vapor – is the gaseous state of water and is invisible
7
Acid Rain Testing pH of water or a substance
Caused by emissions (released into the air) of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids Example: burning fossil fuels such as coal or oil Changes the pH in water pH tells if it is a base or acid Testing pH of water or a substance
8
Effects of Acid Rain
10
Ozone Colorless, odorless reactive gas comprised (made of/contains) of three oxygen atoms; found in the stratosphere where is absorbs ultraviolet (UV) from solar radiation
