Fig. 1 Gut absorptive capacity after solute administration during gut I/R. Jejunum was mounted in a Ussing chamber and gut absorptive capacity was assessed by measuring the change in Isc after the addition of 10 mmol/L glucose to the mucosal reservoir and 10 mmol/L mannitol to the serosal reservoir (osmotic control). Values are expressed as means ± SEM, n = 6–9. Means with different letters (a or b) are significantly different. Sham control, sham laparotomy with mannitol; Sham glu/ala, sham laparotomy with (glucose + alanine); I/R control, I/R with mannitol; I/R glu/ala, I/R with (glucose + alanine); I/R Glu, I/R with glucose; I/R Ala, I/R with alanine; and I/R glut, I/R with glutamine. Long arrow, addition of glucose; short arrow, addition of phloridzin. ●, Sham; ▴, I/R control; ■, I/R alanine; ▾, I/R glucose; ♦, I/R glutamine; (hex symbol), I/R glucose + alanine. Fig. 3 Theophylline stimulation after solute administration during gut I/R. Jejunum was mounted in an Ussing chamber and the response to theophylline was assessed by measuring the change in Isc after the addition of 50 mmol/L theophylline to the mucosal and serosal reservoirs. Sham, sham laparotomy with (glucose + alanine); I/R glucose, I/R with glucose; and I/R alanine, I/R with alanine.
