Sock Puppet Predictions
Read the first 2 parallel episodes of “Brer Possum’s Dilemma” and use Sock Puppets app to make a prediction of the ending. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. After reading the first 2 pages of “Brer Possum’s Dilemma,” you will pause and open the Sock Puppet app. You will then choose 2 puppet character who will discuss in a brief video what they predict will happen between Brer Possum and Brer Snake. The sock puppet characters will predict 2 things: First, they will decide what the 3rd parallel episode will be since you will first read the episodes with Snake wanting the brick off and the second episode in which Snake wanted to be lifted out of the hole. The sock puppet video must be less than 1 minute long. Turn and share your video with a partner. This task uses: Common Core/NG Standard(s): RL.8.3: Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story propel action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision. Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader create such effects as suspense or humor. Analyze how a texts makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas or events. TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ Mary Vaughan/ School: JI Watson Middle Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade/ ELA Task Card Level: 2 Special Directions/Considerations: Space students out throughout the room, so that they may speak into their devices without too much distraction. Remind them all to use 6 inch voices when creating their video. Activity Evaluation: Pair evaluation of video and checked by teacher. Prerequisites for students: Reading first 2 pages of “Brer Possum’s Dilemma,” understanding of what a folktale is. Text being used: Holt Literature text.
