1 What do you think the red bits are?
How can we manage the biospheres on a variety of scales to make them more sustainable? Tuesday, 01 January 2019

2 What is sustainability?
Factors: Social Environmental Economic To do with: People The world around us Money

3 To visualise Think of it as a 3-legged stool: If any of the legs are taken away then the stool will fall over, meaning that sustainability is not reached.

4 Mind-mapping uses of the TRF: who uses it and how does it cause conflict?
Cuts down rainforest to graze cattle for beef burgers Conflict caused because destroying TRF prevents forest-dwellers from living as they do Lives in the forest and uses it for food Multinational company (like McDonalds) Forest dweller Other uses of the rain forest might include: mining / forestry / rubber plantations / cash crops (like coffee beans that are sold to make money, not feed people)

5 Using the information on page 54, decide what you would do if you only had $50m
You need to say: what you have chosen and why Why you didn’t choose some options What you would do to improve on the options you have chosen

6 This means that… Rich land owners buy TRF for cattle ranching. This means that they cut the trees down to make space. This means that the TRF is destroyed. This means that the ecosystem is imbalanced. This means that people who depend on the TRF are put at risk. This means that native people have to move elsewhere. This means that people move to cities. This means that cities are overcrowded. This means that Amazon dwellers die out.

7 Look at the diagram of local sustainable management on p55
Sketch diagram on p55 of local sustainable management Categorise the labels from the diagram into: “Looking to the future” “Community involvement” “Eco-friendly” “Pro-poor” (either by colour coding labels or numbering and putting into columns underneath)

8 Does size matter? Management can occur of a variety of scales: Local
National Global Use example of pg55 to talk about local ideas.

9 Use the book to help you fill in the table on the pros and cons of management scales
Advantages Disadvantages Local National International / Global

10 Review of scales Local National Global
