1 Welcome to the Wies’n! (Welcome to the Oktoberfest!)

2 What is Oktoberfest? It started on October 12,1810 when King Ludwig I got married to Princess Therese Saxony-Hildburghauser. There was a festival held in front of the city gates which the whole city of Munich was invited to. As the event came to a close, there would be horse races in the present of the royal family . This event gave rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest in Bavaria. The place, Theresienwiese, they held the event was named after the princess.

3 Oktoberfest in 1811 In 1811 the Agricultural Show was an added part to the horse race. The show boosted Bavarian agriculture. The horse race was one of the oldest and at one point was the most popular event but is no longer held toady. In 1818 the first carousels and two swings were set up. The small beer stands turned into beer tents and halls in 1896. The rest of the festival was taken up by a fun fair. In 1870s the fairground trade developed more in Germany. 1887 Oktoberfest was moved to September because of the heavy rainfall Munches gets.

4 Oktoberfest Today Oktoberfest in Munich is the largest festival in the world. It has the international flavor of the 21 century. The festival is accompanied by a few other events: the Grand Oktoberfest landlords and breweries, the Costume and Rifleman’s Processions, and a concert involving all the brass bands represented at the “Wies’n” About 6 million visitors come from all over the world each year for the festival. Kalbsbraterrel replaces Kalbskuchl on Wirtsbundenstraße 50. Marshall is the successor Hippodrome, with a horse theme that seats 3,500 with a garden for 900 people. Anjas’ Kraus’ wurstbratelei (Schaustellerstraße 50) will serve soy würstchen (sausages) for the first time. There are portable mobile phone chargers available at the two official Oktoberfest merchandise stalls.
