1 Chapter 11 Production

2 Components Each individual part of a product is called a component

3 Assemblies Components are assembled with other components
This means they are put together in a planned way Assembled components are called assemblies

4 Subassembly If an assembly will be used as a component in another product, it is called a subassembly. Example, Handlebars and brakes of a bicycle.

5 Final Assembly The point at which all the parts are combined to form the product is called final assembly.

6 Production Control Controlling what is made and when it is made.

7 Inventory Control Means keeping track of Raw materials Purchased parts
Supplies Finished goods

8 Raw Material Is any material before it enters processing
Example- Potatoes, corn, and cheese may be raw materials at a snack food factory.

9 Purchased Parts Are ready-made parts that the company buys.
A lawn mower factory might buy wheels and engines.

10 Finished Goods Products that are completed but not yet sold are called finished goods.

11 Quality Assurance Making sure the product is produced according to plans and meets all specifications. Sometimes this is called quality control. The level of quality set in advance is called quality standard

12 International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
ISO promotes and coordinates worldwide standards for many things. One important ISO standard is ISO 9000

13 (ISO) continued This is a set of standards for manufacturing companies to use in establishing and maintaining documentation of their manufacturing practices. This implies that they produce quality products because they consistently follow procedures.

14 Specifications Detailed descriptions of the design standards for a part or product. May include drawings. Rules about shape, size, function, performance

15 Acceptance Sampling Inspecting a few randomly selected products to see if they meet the quality standards. If they meet standards then the whole lot is approved If not the whole lot is rejected.

16 Acceptance Level The acceptance level is how many of the sample must pass if the lot is to be accepted.
