GITARU WATER TREATMENT PLANT & BOTTLING UNIT
Presented by: Evans M. Mulli Engineer I – Gitaru Power Station & Esther N. Waweru Senior Admin. Asst. 2017 4TH COPI-EH FORUM, KSSC MATENDENI 16TH MARCH 2017

PRESENTATION OUTLINE Introduction Objective Problem justification Improvements Data Analysis Conclusion Recommendation Implementation
3
INTRODUCTION It’s a legal requirement under OSHA 2007 (Section 91 Sub-section 1 & 2) to provide clean and safe drinking water to employees at the work place. Currently, KenGen outsources the provision of drinking water to its employees which is costly and prone to logistical challenges.
4
INTRODUCTION Cont’d The idea of setting up a bottling plant was proposed by the Chief Engineer – Gitaru Power Station and taken up by Strategic Business Development Department for implementation because: Cost effective, Adequate water, Water Test Results found to be fit for human consumption. Optimize on the available resources Generate revenue
5
ANALYSIS OF THE NEED/PROBLEM
Current KenGen population stands at 2,408 employees as at 2nd February, The company awards tenders to supply 907,544 litres of drinking water to employees annually. The company spends substantial amount of money in provision of this commodity through contracting. Annual Contracting Cost for Supply of Drinking Water in KenGen is Kshs. 38,833,

DETERMINATION OF PROJECT VIABILITY
Use of Seepage water at the power house was taken as the best solution because; Water is pre-filtered (no pre-treatment chemicals to remove suspended particles i.e. Aluminum sulphate and Sodium Bicarbonate are not used) Cost effective – minimal use of chemicals Healthy – minimal chemicals
7
DETERMINATION OF PROJECT VIABILITY
Water analysis - to determine if its good for human consumption Water seepage quantities at the power house Infrastructure - land, electric power, roads, security
8
WATER TEST RESULTS
9
DETERMINATION OF SEEPAGE WATER VOLUME (METHOD I )
Rectangular channel method – Take the volume of water in the channel then measure the speed & volume per minute for a given distance of 3m. Then convert it to litres per hour. This generated 5610 litres/hr on average after carrying out six measurements.
10
DETERMINATION OF SEEPAGE WATER VOLUME (METHOD II )
Actual flow measurement – Fill water in a 500litre tank then measure how long it takes to fill the tank. This was carried out twice at different dam levels and the results were as follows;
11
IMPLEMENTATION Tender was advertised in February 2016,
Site visit was on 3rd March 2016 Tender closing and opening was on 16th March 2016 Tender evaluation was carried out in April 2016 The contract was awarded to Aquachem Technologies in June 2016. Project implementation is ongoing and expected completion and handover will be in August 2017. Civil works are complete i.e. ablution block, offices and bottling room.

OVERVIEW OF THE BOTTLING PLANT
Located at Gitaru Power Station at the entry to the access tunnel Plant Capacity – 3,000litres/hr Measured water yield – 5,000litres/hr Filtration method – Reverse Osmosis
13
IMPLEMENTATION The costs of setting up this plant and benefits are as follows Annual Contracting Expenditure (Recurrent) Kshs 38,833,172.32 Cost of setting up a bottling plant (one off) Kshs 37,832,077.60 Cost of dispensers and 18.9L bottles – Kshs 1,494,200.00 Recurrent operational & Maintenance cost per year – Kshs 6,598,080.00 Savings in the 1st Year – (Kshs 7,091,185.28/-) Savings in the 2nd Year -Kshs 25,143,907.04 Savings in the other preceding years will be Kshs 32,235,092.32
