1 Carnival of the Animals Introduction and Royal Lion’s March

2 Learning Activities The activities are based off Lowell Mason’s teaching method, the Pestalozzi Method. The purpose of education is to enrich the lives of students and help them develop into exceptional members of society through their own powers and talents. Use active learning and let the student take charge of his/her education. HAVE FUN!

3 Lowell Mason, The lion Explain to the class, Lowell Mason had an idea to make the world better: began Music Education in the U.S.A. He taught in Boston, MA for free to show that it works! He’s the leader (lion) of Music Education!

4 Singing The student will sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Divide into groups and take turns singing lead and backup vocals. Everyone has the chance to feel special!

5 Recorders The class shall play chord roots to Circle of Life.
This will help the student hear chord changes and be able to identify them in other pieces they listen to.

6 Drums Lions come from Africa.
Show picture YouTube video of the African Tribal Drums. Divide class into two groups (or all together) and organize an original tribal piece using available drums, desks, trash can, etc. Get creative!

7 Introduction and Royal March of the Lion
Show the video with the drawing interpretation. As the students watch, encourage them to think of their own interpretation of the lion. Note: While watching the video, each student shall create their masks. After watching the video, the other video will be shown (with the lion painting). Each student will have the opportunity to portray their interpretation and become the leader.

8 More Tribal fun Use the tribal video instructing the class to dance with the music! Use scarves, jewelry, costumes, etc. Let out your innermost African!

9 Art Activities Each student shall create their own lion mask.
After completing the masks, each student will have 8 beats to be a pack leader. He/she will lead the others in how the lion is behaving. Scarves can be used
