Welcome to Language Arts 8!
Literature based, which means that from everything that we read (stories, plays, novels, poetry), we will be working on comprehension, vocabulary, and writing from them. Classroom Rules 10 MINUTE RULE —You can’t leave! Be sure you have your textbook, assignment, notes, notebooks, etc. with you. CELL PHONE —Place FACEDOWN on the corner of your desk as soon as you are in the classroom. Please mute it or turn it off. It is NOT FOR SOCIALIZING but for researching. BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS. Don’t interrupt. If you have an answer, question, or comment, raise your hand and wait your turn. ABSOLUTELY NO FEET ON THE BOOKSTAND of the desk in front of you! PLEASE SIT UP IN YOUR DESK AND LISTEN…or at least pretend you are listening!

Grading = A Daily Work 20% = B Quizzes/Writing 30% = C Tests 50% = D IF YOU DO YOUR WORK EVERY DAY, YOU NOT ONLY DEMONSTRATE RESPONSIBILITY BUT RESEPCT. YOU WILL HAVE BETTER GRADES BECAUSE YOU PRACTICED. YOU WILL BE BETTER PREPARED FOR QUIZZES AND TESTS.

Q&A: Using the notecard, CSA the following.
What do the letters CSA represent? What must a sentence begin and end with? Write a simple sentence with one adjective in it that describes you. Write a complex sentence explaining why you want an A in this class. Can you ever begin a sentence with the word because? (yes or no)

You can always view what the Ranger teachers are doing in their classrooms. Go to the Mandan schools webpage. ( Under schools select Middle School. Go to the TEAM link on the left. Select Rangers. You will see the team page plus all of your teachers’ pages. If you are absent for any reason, you can get your assignments without calling in!

Language Arts Academic Goals :
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
