H.E.R.O. is an acronym for Have Everything Ready & Organized
This binder is home to EVERYTHING students and parents need to keep up-to-date with what is going on at school. Everything we need to stay in touch should ALWAYS go through this binder and/or agenda. H.E.R.O. binders are important in helping students develop organizational skills. Students are expected to bring their H.E.R.O. binders AND signed agenda DAILY. Contact Information for Mrs. Betsy Menck Room #09 – Yellow Ramp Phone number – – Class Web Page: Go to elementary website (fshisd.net). Find us under the “About Us” tab and then “Staff Directory.”

How to Make Spelling FUN!
Look at the word, say the word, try to memorize the word (chunk it if needed), write the word from memory, and check it to see if you are right. Use magnetic letters to spell words Call out spelling words in the car Take a pre-test on Monday to see what words to work on. Don’t forget to review the rest of the words, too! Paint spelling words Use shaving cream to spell words Got a Magna Doodle? Write your spelling words on it! Use scrabble tiles (add up the points for each words to practice math skills) SpellingCity.com – This site has tons of fun games to play using spelling words.

Build a Reader at Home Take turns reading.
Pick “Good Fit” books (Do they know most of the words? Is it interesting? Can they retell the story?). Ask questions – main idea, characters, setting, problem, solution, predictions, retell story, moral of the story. For beginning readers, don’t automatically tell a word. Get them to sound it out, break the word into parts, try a different vowel sound, use illustrations for clues, and memorize sight words.

Check the back pocket for graded work or announcements. Keep at home. Check the dated agenda page for notes and behavior reports. Parents – initial the agenda daily. (I will try and stamp the agendas daily, but if I forget, assume that no news is good news). Put finished homework and/or notes in the front pocket. Homework Homework Packet goes home on Monday. Choose only 2 spelling activities from 4 choices to complete weekly. SPELLING is due Tuesday and Thursday. Homework Packet is due FRIDAY. Packet has both reading and spelling extra practice. Students should read daily for 20 minutes from computer programs, library books, or books from home.
